In 1985, Stephen Smith bought a single used truck and started delivering heating oil to neighbors across South County, Rhode Island. Forty years later, SmithCo Oil is still right here on Main Street in Wakefield, still family-run, and still answering the phone when you call.
What started with one truck and a handful of accounts has grown into Southern Rhode Island’s leading independent heating oil dealer. As we approach our 41st anniversary, a new generation of Smiths is carrying the same standard forward: dependable delivery, honest service, and the kind of relationship where the technician who shows up at your door knows your name and your boiler.
Four decades of keeping South County warm.
Stephen Smith founded SmithCo Oil with one belief: a local heating company should treat its customers like neighbors, because they are. That meant answering the phone yourself. Showing up when you said you would. Charging a fair price. And never letting a customer go cold on a Sunday morning.
Four decades later, very little has changed about how SmithCo operates. The fleet has grown to 15 oil delivery and service trucks. The customer base has grown to over 3,000 South County households. The licensing has expanded to include Rhode Island Fuel Oil Dealer License #333 and Master Pipe Fitter License #2703. But the standard hasn’t budged.
