Rural inland Rhode Island, mill villages and farmland
Richmond is South County’s rural inland town. No coastline, no salt ponds, no resort villages. Just 40 square miles of farmland, woodland, mill villages along the Wood and Pawcatuck Rivers, and the largest state-owned recreational area in Rhode Island. Incorporated in 1747 and named for the colonial attorney general Edward Richmond, the town is defined by its 19th-century mill heritage and its 20th-century transformation into a quiet bedroom community along the I-95 corridor. SmithCo has delivered oil and serviced heating equipment from our Wakefield headquarters out to Richmond’s villages and rural roads for our full 40 years.
Nine villages, rural routes, daily service
Richmond has more named villages than most towns its size because each historic mill site became its own community. Most still have their own ZIP codes.
Hope Valley
The commercial center of Richmond. Hope Valley straddles the Richmond-Hopkinton line and is anchored by the RI State Police Hope Valley Barracks on Route 3. ZIP 02832.
Wyoming
Historic mill village along the Wood River. The Wyoming Village Historic District has been on the National Register since 1974. ZIP 02898.
Carolina
Historic village straddling Richmond and Charlestown along the Pawcatuck River. Greek Revival and Queen Anne homes from 1840 to 1870. ZIP 02812.
Wood River Junction
Former railroad junction village. Home to the Chariho School District main campus and Meadowbrook Pond. ZIP 02894.
Shannock
Mill-era village known for its 19th-century mica factory and Shannock Mills rail stop. Quiet residential streets along the Pawcatuck. ZIP 02875.
Kenyon
Small inland village named for the Kenyon family. Mostly rural residential with surviving mill-era homes. ZIP 02836.
Arcadia & Alton
Northern Richmond villages near the Arcadia Management Area. Rural lots, woodland properties, and the gateway to the largest state park area in Rhode Island.
Woodville
Small village straddling Richmond and Hopkinton along the Wood River. Site of 19th-century iron factory operations.
Usquepaug & Barberville
Tiny eastern Richmond hamlets along the Richmond-South Kingstown line. Rural-residential character with a few clusters of historic homes.
Mill-era historic, rural farmhouse, or newer suburban
Richmond housing breaks cleanly into three eras and three settlement patterns. Each gets its own approach when we service or install equipment.
19th-Century Mill Village Homes
The historic homes in Wyoming, Carolina, Shannock, and Hope Valley village centers. Built between 1810 and 1900, often with tight basements and equipment retrofitted across multiple generations.
Boiler retrofits, careful work in tight basements, periodic oil tank replacement
Rural Inland Farmhouses
Older farmhouses and rural properties scattered across the Arcadia area, Alton, the back roads near the Washington County Fair, and the woodland lots between villages. Larger tanks, longer drives, generational customer relationships.
Larger tank installs, multi-generation service plan accounts, automatic delivery for remote addresses
I-95 Corridor Subdivisions
The bedroom-community subdivisions that grew up along the I-95 corridor after the 1970s. Newer construction with high-efficiency oil-fired systems and modern fuel tank setups.
Annual tune-ups, automatic delivery setup, service plan accounts for newer equipment
Landmarks every Richmond resident knows
If any of these are part of your daily life, your address is well inside our service footprint.
Arcadia Management Area
The largest state-owned recreational area in Rhode Island. Hiking, biking, kayaking, hunting, and fishing across thousands of acres in northwestern Richmond.
Washington County Fair
The only county fair in Rhode Island, held every August in Richmond. The largest annual gathering in town and a regional draw for South County families.
Wood River & Pawcatuck
The two rivers that defined Richmond’s settlement pattern and powered its 19th-century mills. Still the geographic backbone of the town.
Chariho School Campus
The shared school district campus in Wood River Junction serving Charlestown, Richmond, and Hopkinton. The civic center of inland South County.
North-South Trail
The marked statewide hiking trail passes through Richmond. Connects through the Arcadia Management Area and is locally beloved for both quick hikes and long routes.
Bell School & Tug Hollow
The 1826 Bell School in Tug Hollow is one of Richmond’s surviving 19th-century schoolhouses. Now maintained by the Richmond Historical Society.

Rural Routes Mapped
Back roads between Arcadia and Carolina, private drives off Old Mill Road, woodland lots near Wyoming. Our drivers know the routes that newer dealers struggle with.
Inland Winter Experience
Wood River Junction can hit some of the coldest temperatures in Rhode Island. Forty years of working through Richmond winters means we know what fails and when.
Multi-Generation Customers
Many of our Richmond customers were customers of their parents and grandparents. The continuity of family ownership matches the continuity of rural Rhode Island life.
Same Family, Three Generations
Stephen Smith founded SmithCo in 1985. His sons David and Kevin run it today. Local family-owned company, not a regional fuel chain with an inland satellite.
