Bridges to the Mainland
The island town between two bridges
Jamestown is the only true island town we serve. It occupies Conanicut Island in the middle of Narragansett Bay along with the uninhabited Dutch Island and Gould Island. Founded in 1678 and named for James, Duke of York, the town stretches nine miles north to south and barely a mile across at its widest. Pell Bridge connects it to Newport in the east. Jamestown Verrazano Bridge connects it to Kingston and the mainland in the west. SmithCo trucks cross the Verrazano daily from our Wakefield headquarters to deliver oil and service equipment for Jamestown’s 5,000 islanders.
The whole island, all on our routes
Jamestown is small enough that the whole island gets covered in a single delivery run. But every part of the island has its own character.
North End & Conanicut Park
Northern peninsula
The northern tip of the island. Home to the historic Conanicut Island Lighthouse (North Light, 1886) and quiet residential neighborhoods along the bay edge.
Jamestown Village
Commercial center
The main village along Narragansett Avenue. Locally owned restaurants and shops, the one gas station on the island, and the Conanicut Marina overlooking Newport across the East Passage.
Shoreby Hill
Historic resort district
The 58-acre fashionable summer resort district designed by Ernest W. Bowditch in 1898. Listed on the National Register. Estate-scale homes with significant character.
Mackerel Cove & Fox Hill
South-central beach area
The narrow neck of land connecting Conanicut Island to the Beavertail peninsula. Home to Jamestown’s town beach and the Fox Hill nature area.
Beavertail Peninsula
Southern tip
The peninsula at the southern end of the island, connected by a narrow two-lane causeway. Home to Beavertail State Park and the 1856 Beavertail Lighthouse.
Fort Wetherill & East Shore
Eastern shoreline
The eastern bay shore looking across to Newport, anchored by Fort Wetherill State Park. Working waterfront properties, marinas, and historic neighborhoods.
Year-round islander, summer home, or estate property
Jamestown housing falls into three patterns that each get a slightly different approach when we install or service equipment.
Year-Round Island Homes
The homes of the roughly 5,000 year-round Jamestown residents. Many are smaller older homes in the village or along the bay shore. Daily salt-air exposure means equipment needs to be specified for coastal conditions.
Coastal-spec equipment, regular maintenance, automatic delivery setup
Summer & Part-Time Homes
Summer cottages and part-time second homes that fill up between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Owners coordinate pre-arrival heat starts in spring and shutdown drain-downs in fall.
Seasonal start-ups, shutdown drain-downs, salt-air corrosion checks
Shoreby Hill & Estate Homes
The estate-scale homes in Shoreby Hill and other significant historic properties around the island. Often multi-zone heating systems, larger fuel tanks, and the most aggressive salt-air conditions we see anywhere we serve.
Multi-zone service plans, larger tank installs, premium coastal-spec equipment
Landmarks every Jamestown resident knows
If any of these are part of your daily life, your address is well inside our service footprint.
Beavertail Lighthouse
The 1856 stone tower at the southern tip of Conanicut Island. The third-oldest lighthouse site in North America, with beacons dating to 1705.
Beavertail State Park
The 153-acre state park established in 1980 surrounding the lighthouse. Hiking trails, ocean overlooks, and the Jamestown Naturalist Program.
Pell Bridge
The bridge connecting Jamestown to Newport across the East Passage. The eastern entry point to the island and a defining piece of the Jamestown skyline.
Verrazano Bridge
The Jamestown Verrazano Bridge connecting the island to Kingston and the South County mainland. The route our delivery trucks cross every day.
Jamestown Windmill
The 1787 windmill operated until 1896 and is now maintained by the Jamestown Historical Society. National Register listed since 1973.
Fort Wetherill State Park
Coastal defense fortification site overlooking the East Passage. Hiking trails through Revolutionary War-era earthworks and later military structures.
Full menu, daily bridge crossings, island-aware service
Every service we offer is available across the entire island. The Jamestown Verrazano Bridge does not slow our daily routes down.
Heating Oil Delivery
Automatic, will-call, seasonal-arrival, and shutdown deliveries. Our trucks cross the Verrazano Bridge daily to reach Jamestown island addresses on routine schedules.

Heating Installations
Boilers, furnaces, water heaters, oil tanks. Jamestown is surrounded by saltwater on all sides. Every install gets coastal-spec equipment recommendations to handle the marine air exposure.

Heating Repair
Boiler and furnace repair across every Jamestown neighborhood. The salt-air corrosion patterns we see here are different from inland repairs. Our techs know what fails first on the island.

Annual Tune-Ups
Full 12-task tune-ups. Summer cottage owners often book us a week or two before arrival each season so the system is tested and ready when they cross the bridge for the summer.

Service Plans
Annual tune-ups, parts coverage on 50+ components, priority dispatch, and loyalty credits. Salt-air coastal exposure makes service plans especially valuable for island homes.

Emergency Service
A live SmithCo dispatcher answers any hour. Bridge closures during winter storms can isolate the island. We coordinate emergency runs around weather and traffic conditions.

Stephen and his crew have been excellent to us since we bought our home in South County. Reliable delivery, fair pricing, and they actually answer the phone when something goes wrong.

Beyond proximity, here is what keeps the relationships
Daily Bridge Crossings
Our trucks cross the Verrazano Bridge to Jamestown every single day. The island is not an afterthought on our routes. It is a planned stop.
Most Aggressive Salt Air
Jamestown is surrounded by saltwater on every side. The corrosion patterns we see here are the most aggressive in the region. We specify equipment that holds up.
Summer Cottage Rhythms
A meaningful share of Jamestown homes are seasonal. We coordinate pre-arrival heat starts and end-of-season shutdowns with the same families year after year.
Same Family, Three Generations
Stephen Smith founded SmithCo in 1985. His sons David and Kevin run it today. Local family-owned company, not a regional fuel chain with an island satellite.
