Oil Tank Installation

The most important piece of equipment in an oil-heated home is the one most homeowners never think about.

An aging oil tank is the single largest liability in an oil-heated home. A leak can mean a five-figure environmental cleanup, an insurance claim that may not be covered, and a property value hit that follows the home for years. SmithCo is a certified Roth fuel oil safety storage tank installer, which means double-walled, leak-resistant tanks backed by a 30-year warranty against corrosion-related failures. We handle the full job: removal of the old tank, code-compliant install, and proper disposal.

Most South County homeowners do not learn these numbers until after a leak. The math on a planned tank replacement looks very different from the math on an emergency cleanup.

Why Roth Tanks

The double-walled tank engineered to outlast the home

Roth fuel oil safety tanks use a galvanized steel outer wall surrounding a high-density polyethylene inner tank. The space between catches any inner-tank failure before fuel reaches the floor. This is not the bare-steel single-wall tank that sits in most South County basements today.

Galvanized Steel Outer Wall

Welded-seam corrosion-resistant outer shell forms the secondary containment layer.

Polyethylene Inner Tank

Seamless high-density polyethylene cannot rust, corrode, or develop pinhole leaks.

Containment Gap

Space between walls captures any inner-tank failure before fuel touches the floor.

30-Year Warranty

Manufacturer warranty against corrosion-related failures, transferable to new homeowners.

Compact Footprint

Fits through standard 32-inch basement doors, no demo required for installation.

UL-Listed Construction

Meets Underwriters Laboratories standards for residential fuel storage. Code-approved.

Old Tank vs Roth

What you have today vs what we install

Standard 1970s to 2000s Tank

Single-wall steel tank

  • Bare steel construction (no secondary containment)
  • Susceptible to internal corrosion from condensation
  • Pinhole leaks develop without warning after 20+ years
  • Sediment and water collect at tank bottom
  • No warranty after original 5 to 10 year period
  • Often non-compliant with current code standards

Roth Double-Wall Tank

Galvanized steel + polyethylene

  • Double-walled construction with secondary containment
  • Polyethylene inner tank cannot corrode
  • Engineered to prevent pinhole leaks for life of tank
  • Smooth interior reduces sediment and condensation
  • 30-year corrosion warranty, transferable on home sale
  • UL-listed, fully code-compliant in all RI municipalities

Risk Assessment

Should you be planning a tank replacement?

Score your tank against these conditions. Two or more is the threshold where most insurers and inspectors start treating the tank as a real liability.

+1
Tank is 20 or more years old
Most single-wall tanks installed before 2005 are at or past their reliable service life.

+2
Visible surface rust on the tank itself
Rust visible on the steel (not just fittings) means corrosion has started working through the wall.

+2
Oil staining on the floor under the tank
Any visible oil residue or staining suggests a slow leak that may already be active.

+3
You smell oil in the basement
A persistent oil smell when the burner is not firing indicates active vapor leakage. Schedule immediately.

+1
You are planning to sell within 5 years
Aging single-wall tanks can complicate sales, fail inspections, and reduce buyer offers.

+2
Tank sits in a finished basement or near living space
Any leak in a finished area becomes a far more expensive remediation than one in an unfinished utility space.

+1
No original install paperwork or warranty info
Unknown tank age is a red flag for both insurers and prospective buyers.

0 to 1 Points
Tank is likely fine. Re-evaluate annually.
2 to 4 Points
Schedule a tank evaluation. Plan replacement within 12 to 24 months.
5+ Points
Schedule replacement now. The math no longer favors waiting.

Common Questions

Oil tank installation, answered

How long does an oil tank replacement take?
Most residential oil tank replacements are completed in one full working day. Removal of the old tank, installation and connection of the new Roth tank, pressure testing, and burner re-firing all happen on install day. You will have heat back the same day.
Will my homeowner’s insurance cover an oil tank leak?
Often not. Standard homeowner’s policies frequently exclude or limit coverage for oil tank leaks, especially on older tanks. Some insurers require proof of a current tank inspection or refuse to renew policies for homes with single-wall tanks past a certain age. Check your specific policy. A Roth tank installation often improves both insurability and premium terms.
Will the Roth tank fit through my basement door?
Yes, in nearly all cases. Roth tanks are engineered to fit through standard 32-inch basement doors and bulkheads. We measure access during the evaluation visit to confirm. This is one of the design advantages over older steel tanks that often required basement demolition for removal.
What happens to the residual fuel in my old tank?
We pump out remaining usable fuel and transfer it to the new tank as part of the install. Any unrecoverable residue at the bottom of the old tank is handled under proper disposal protocols. The whole process is included in our quote, with no separate vendor or fees.
Do I need a permit for tank replacement?
Yes, most South County municipalities require a permit for oil tank replacement. We handle the permit process in-house, schedule any required inspections, and submit closeout paperwork. As a Master Pipe Fitter under RI License #2703, we are accountable for code compliance on every job.
Can I install a tank outside instead of in the basement?
Yes, Roth tanks come in models rated for both indoor and outdoor installation. Outdoor placement reduces interior basement footprint but requires additional weather and theft considerations. We walk through the tradeoffs during the in-home visit.
