Boilers, Explained

How an oil boiler heats your home

A boiler does not actually boil water. It heats water to roughly 180 degrees Fahrenheit and circulates it through a closed loop to radiators, baseboard convectors, or radiant floor tubing. The water transfers heat to each room, then returns to the boiler to be reheated. The fuel source for that heating is oil burned through a high-efficiency burner that pressurizes and atomizes the fuel for clean combustion.

Most South County homes built between 1955 and 1990 use boiler systems with cast-iron baseboard or radiator distribution. Boilers tend to outlast furnaces because the heat exchanger is submerged in water rather than exposed to flame and air. Properly maintained, a quality boiler can last 25 to 30 years. If yours is older than that or showing signs of rust, sediment, or efficiency loss, replacement starts paying for itself in fuel savings within a few seasons.

Real Numbers

What a new boiler actually saves you

Efficiency on heating equipment is measured as Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, or AFUE. It tells you what percentage of the fuel you burn actually becomes usable heat. The rest goes up the flue as waste. Older boilers can run as low as 65 percent AFUE. Modern high-efficiency oil boilers hit 87 to 95 percent. That gap is real money every winter.

If your current boiler is at
65% AFUE
A 90% replacement saves
~28% on annual fuel

If your current boiler is at
75% AFUE
A 90% replacement saves
~17% on annual fuel

Replace or Repair

Is it time to replace your boiler?

Replacement is not always the right call. Here is the decision logic we walk through with every customer evaluating an old system.

Replace

Replacement makes sense if…

  • Boiler is 25 or more years old
  • You have had two or more major repairs in the past 3 years
  • Heat exchanger has cracked or is leaking
  • Fuel bills have crept up year over year with no usage change
  • Rust, scaling, or sediment is visible in the system
  • System cannot maintain comfort during cold snaps
Repair

Stick with repair if…

  • Boiler is under 15 years old and well-maintained
  • This is the first significant repair in the boiler’s life
  • The failed part is a controller, circulator, or expansion tank (not the heat exchanger)
  • Current AFUE is already 80 percent or higher
  • You are planning to move within 3 years

Brands We Install

Premium oil-fired boiler manufacturers

We are not tied to a single brand. The right boiler depends on the home, the budget, and what you are heating. These are the manufacturers we install most often because they have proven reliability and strong warranty support in our service area.

Energy Kinetics
High-efficiency System 2000 series. Long-time SmithCo preferred line.

Buderus
German-engineered cast iron boilers. Excellent reliability record.

Burnham
US-built cast iron and steel options. Strong value at mid-tier.

Weil-McLain
Industry-standard heat exchangers. Decades-long warranty.

Our Install Process

What happens between your call and a working boiler

01

In-home evaluation

A SmithCo technician (not a salesperson) visits the home, inspects the existing system, measures rooms for heat-loss calculation, and reviews any pain points you have with the current setup. This visit is free.

02

Written quote with sizing

Within a few days you get a written quote that includes the recommended boiler model, BTU sizing math, removal of the old unit, all installation labor, permits, and warranty terms. No high-pressure sales tactics.

03

Permits and scheduling

Once you approve the quote, we pull permits with the municipality, order the equipment, and confirm an install date that works around your schedule. Most jobs land within two to four weeks.

04

Installation day

Our crew arrives, drains and removes the old boiler, sets the new unit, connects supply and return lines, wires controls, and tests the system. Old equipment leaves with us. Most jobs finish in one day.

05

Testing, walkthrough, and registration

We fire the boiler, run efficiency tests, walk you through controls and thermostat behavior, and register the warranty in your name. If the local inspector needs to visit, we schedule and meet them.

For the past 27 years, I have used SmithCo Oil to deliver oil while also providing a service contract for the burner. I could not be more satisfied with the timeliness of their deliveries or the expertise of their maintenance technicians.

Common Questions

Boiler installation, answered

How long does a boiler installation take?
Most boiler replacements are completed in one full working day. Larger or more complex jobs (multiple zones, integrated indirect water heater, code upgrades to existing piping) can stretch to two days. We confirm timeline in writing before the install date.
How is boiler sizing actually calculated?
We use a heat-loss calculation based on the home’s square footage, insulation values, window count and type, ceiling heights, and outdoor design temperature for your zone. The output is a BTU number, which determines which boiler size matches your home. Oversized boilers short-cycle and waste fuel. Undersized boilers run constantly and never catch up on the coldest days.
Can I keep my old baseboard and radiators?
In most cases yes. Cast iron baseboard and radiators are extremely durable and rarely need replacement. We inspect them as part of the install evaluation. If a specific section is corroded or undersized for the room, we will flag it, but full distribution replacement is uncommon.
Do you offer financing on boiler installations?
For larger jobs we can discuss financing options when you come in for the quote. Manufacturer rebates may also apply on certain high-efficiency systems, and those are often time-limited, so it is worth asking when you call.
What about converting from oil to gas or a heat pump?
We are an oil heating specialist. If a conversion is the right move for your home, we will be honest about it during the evaluation. For most existing oil-heated homes in South County without a gas line on the street, a high-efficiency oil boiler remains the most cost-effective long-term play. Heat pumps work well as supplemental systems but rarely replace oil boilers in this climate without significant home envelope upgrades.
What warranty comes with a new boiler?
Manufacturer warranties on quality oil boilers range from 10 years to a lifetime on the heat exchanger, with shorter periods on controls and electronics. We register your warranty in your name as part of the install and stand behind our installation workmanship in addition to the manufacturer coverage.
