Oil Boiler Repair in South County, RI

Oil Boiler Repair

When your boiler stops doing the one thing it is supposed to do

Oil boilers fail in predictable ways. Circulator pumps wear out. Zone valves stick. Aquastats lose calibration. Expansion tanks waterlog. Most boiler repairs are part-level fixes that a properly equipped tech can knock out in a single visit. SmithCo dispatches a Master Pipe Fitter on every job, and we work on all major brands of oil boilers regardless of who installed them. Same-day service across South County, 24/7 emergency response when heat is completely out.

Common Boiler Repairs

The four boiler repairs we run most often

Most boiler service calls trace back to one of these four issues. Each one is fixable, and most can be diagnosed and repaired in a single visit when we have the right parts on the truck.

01
The Issue

Circulator Pump Failure

The circulator pump moves heated water from the boiler through your zones. When it fails, you may hear it humming without moving water, or hear nothing at all. Symptoms include zones that will not heat, banging in the pipes, or the boiler firing but no heat reaching rooms.

The Fix

Pump replacement is typically a 1-hour job. We carry common circulator brands (Taco, Grundfos, Bell & Gossett) on the truck. Most repairs land in the $250 to $450 range including parts and labor.

02
The Issue

Stuck or Failed Zone Valve

Zone valves open and close to send hot water to different parts of the home on demand. When one fails, that zone gets either no heat at all or constant heat (valve stuck open). Common in multi-zone homes, especially after a system has been running for 10+ years.

The Fix

Most zone valve repairs replace just the motor head, not the full valve body, which saves significantly on labor. Honeywell and Taco zone valves are our most common replacements. Repair typically lands in the $200 to $400 range.

03
The Issue

Aquastat Calibration or Failure

The aquastat controls boiler water temperature, telling the burner when to fire and when to shut off. When it drifts out of calibration or fails outright, the boiler may short-cycle (firing every few minutes), refuse to fire at all, or overheat to the point of triggering the pressure relief valve.

The Fix

Recalibration is often possible without replacement. Full aquastat swap takes about 90 minutes when needed. Honeywell L8148 and similar control replacements run $300 to $500 including labor.

04
The Issue

Expansion Tank Waterlogging

The expansion tank gives heated water somewhere to expand into without spiking system pressure. When it waterlogs (loses its air charge), pressure climbs, the relief valve dumps water, and the boiler may shut down. Often confused with “the boiler is leaking” when the leak is actually the relief valve doing its job.

The Fix

Sometimes the tank can be recharged. More often it needs replacement. Newer Extrol-style tanks last 10 to 15 years and install in under an hour. Repair typically lands in the $200 to $350 range.

Component Coverage

Every part of an oil boiler, repaired or replaced

Our techs are trained on the full oil boiler system from burner to baseboard. The list below is not exhaustive, but it covers the components that account for most repair work in South County homes.

Combustion

Burners & Nozzles

Burner cleaning, nozzle replacement, electrode adjustment, combustion tuning. Most boiler tune-ups address all four.

Controls

Aquastats & Thermostats

Temperature controls, high-limit safety switches, low-water cutoffs, and thermostat troubleshooting.

Circulation

Pumps & Zone Valves

Circulator motors, pump cartridges, zone valve heads and bodies, manifold leaks, and air bleed issues.

Pressure

Expansion Tanks & Relief Valves

Tank replacement, pressure relief valve testing and replacement, fill valve issues, system pressure tuning.

Fuel System

Oil Lines & Filters

Fuel filter replacement, oil line repairs, pump strainer cleaning, and supply line leaks.

Distribution

Baseboard & Radiator Repair

Baseboard fin straightening, radiator bleeding, hidden leak detection, and zone-by-zone diagnostics.

Repair or Replace

When does it stop making sense to keep repairing?

There is no single answer, but there is a guideline. If the cost of the repair is more than half the cost of a new boiler installation, and the existing unit is more than 15 years old, replacement usually wins on long-term math. We walk through this with you honestly before recommending either path.

If replacement is the right call, see Boiler Installation

Repair Makes Sense
  • Boiler is under 15 years old
  • Single component failure (pump, valve, sensor)
  • Repair cost under 50% of replacement
  • System has been reliable until this issue
  • Recent annual tune-ups documented
Replacement Wins
  • Boiler is over 20 years old
  • Heat exchanger crack or major failure
  • Multiple recent repair calls in 24 months
  • Efficiency is dropping noticeably year over year
  • Repair cost exceeds 50% of replacement

Common Questions

Oil boiler repair, answered

My boiler reset button keeps tripping. Can I keep resetting it?
No. Resetting the boiler more than once or twice without resolving the underlying issue can cause fuel buildup in the combustion chamber, which becomes a safety hazard on the next ignition attempt. If the reset trips again, stop resetting and call. Common causes are clogged nozzles, dirty filters, or low fuel.
How long does an average boiler repair take?
Most boiler repairs are completed in 1 to 2 hours from arrival, assuming the part is on the truck. Diagnostics that turn into multi-component repairs can run 3 to 4 hours. Repairs requiring uncommon parts may need a follow-up visit, but we tell you that up front.
What does a typical boiler repair cost?
Most common boiler repairs (circulator pump, zone valve, expansion tank, aquastat) land between $200 and $500 including parts and labor. Larger repairs (combustion chamber, heat exchanger work) can run higher. We write a quote before any work and you decide whether to proceed.
Do you work on all brands of oil boilers?
Yes. We service Energy Kinetics, Buderus, Burnham, Weil-McLain, Peerless, Crown, Utica, and other common oil boiler brands. If your boiler is unusual or imported, we may need to source parts, but we will not turn down a repair call just because we did not install the unit.
My boiler is leaking water. Is it an emergency?
Often yes. Active water leaks from a boiler can damage the unit, the floor, and surrounding components. Sometimes the “leak” is just a pressure relief valve doing its job (which still points to an underlying problem). Turn off the boiler if water is pooling, and call us right away.
Will a service plan cover the cost of this repair?
If you currently have a SmithCo service plan, parts coverage applies to 50+ system components depending on your plan tier. Labor and emergency surcharges may also be reduced or waived. If you do not have a plan, this repair will be billed standalone, but joining the plan at the time of the repair is often the best long-term math.
